Ravilious Rotunda Bar, Midland Hotel

In November 2013, my good friend, Isa Clee-Cadman, and I undertook the painting of a new mural in the Rotunda Bar at the Midland Hotel, Morecambe.
The design for the mural was based on the original, long-lost version painted by the celebrated British Artist, Eric Ravilious, and his wife, Thirza Garwood, in the 1930s. The only surviving images of the original are in the form of black and white photographs, so we had to take liberties in working out our colour schemes (we used Ravilious' beautiful water-colour paintings as a point of departure), as well as adapting the mural itself to fit the new lay-out of the bar.
The end result is still visible at the hotel, and we are pretty proud of it!! It was a real pleasure to work on: long-hours of standing on scaffolding attempting to reproduce Ravilious and Garwood's brushstrokes and techniques, constantly accompanied by the view across Morecambe Bay, and the changing light over the mud-flats and on the Lakeland hills beyond, visible through the curved windows of the Rotunda bar.
